Chapter 20
Slater
Over the past two weeks, Sabela and I lived like a regular married couple. Still unsure of Davin’s next move, we’ve done everything together, from working, shopping, laundry at the local laundromat, and if we managed to be up before the sun, we’d take a morning jog on the beach before work. Surprisingly, Davin hadn’t made any more threats since Sabela was released from jail, but I wasn’t ready to let down my guard just yet. Having the locks changed eased our minds considerably, but we still hadn’t gotten around to changing her cell phone number. We needed to do it soon.
Living at the duplex hasn’t been easy for us. For me, it would always be the place Sabela shared with Davin. It will never feel like our home. But I was there for her. Knowing how uncomfortable she now felt, I asked her if she had any friends she could stay with, but she wouldn’t have it and insisted on staying with me. If I could, I would get us a new place tomorrow, but I just don’t have that kind of cash laying around. For now, we’re stuck here.
Sabela showed me a photo of this guy, Davin. He didn’t look like anything I had imagined and my first thought was, What the hell did Sabela see in him. He certainly wasn’t a tough guy, dressed in a dorky white shirt and ugly yellow shorts. I was certain he’d never flexed a muscle, with those skinny arms of his, and his pasty white legs didn’t look any better. I would have no problem taking this guy on, that’s for sure. But someone would have to pull me off him before I beat him to a pulp for all the shit he’s done to Sabela.
I studied the picture some more. His eyes definitely looked shady—I could tell he wasn’t all there in the head. I mean, come on. No normal, sane guy would have his ex-girlfriend arrested for a crime that never happened. But a sick motherfucker would. What bothered me the most though was, I had a feeling we hadn’t heard the last from the asshole. I wondered what he would try next? Whatever it was, he was going to have to get through me first.
Being with Sabela just felt right. She was perfect in every way and I couldn’t imagine my life without her. I would protect her, no matter what. In such a short time, our relationship had grown so much. I knew it sounded crazy, but I already knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. She just didn’t know it yet. I was doing my best to take things slow but it wasn’t always that easy.
A few weeks ago, after a passionate night of lovemaking, I held her in my arms, and as I smelled the sweet scent of her hair, I told her I loved her and waited for her reaction, not knowing what to expect. Fears were roaming inside of me that I may have come on too strong, too soon, and had probably scared her off.
